Don't Miss Your Calling

We all want to live lives that are fueled by a deep sense of purpose.  People are attracted to people who are passionately pursuing their deepest calling in life.  It draws us to them because we all long to live lives that matter.  It is why we look up to leaders like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Gandhi, etc.  These people all lived with a deep sense of purpose and passion that carried them beyond unimaginable obstacles to leave their imprint in this world in a way few before them ever have.

Most of society longs to live a life on mission, but gets distracted by the pulls of the world.  We get sucked into the vortex of measuring our lives against things that won’t matter on our death beds.  We measure success by the cars we drive, the square footage of our houses, or how trendy we dress compared to our peers.  Mission minded people don’t live lives fueled by comparison.  Zig Ziglar once said, “Outstanding people have one thing in common, an absolute sense of mission.”  I have found this to be true amongst anyone in life I have ever looked up to and aspired to be like.

Tony Robbins had the privilege of interviewing Nelson Mandela once.  Nelson Mandela spent 27 long, grueling years in prison and had the resilience and perseverance to not only survive prison, but to then come out and become the President of South Africa and end Apartheid and racial segregation in the country.  In the interview, Tony asked him how he survived 27 years in prison.  Nelson Mandela got real serious, looked him straight in the eyes and said, “I didn’t survive, I prepared.”  What a powerful response from one of the greatest leaders of our time.

If you are struggling to find a mission that stirs your heart and soul, I would encourage you to start spending more time with mission minded people.  Their passion and energy will rub off on you and either suck you into their mission, or guide you to your own.  Whatever you do, don’t go another year without finding something that stirs your heart and soul- something worth living for, fighting for, and even dying for.  It could change your life forever, and those you serve in the process.
